Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I wanted to be a Tuva Fellow to more easily integrate the resources Tuva has to offer into my classroom. I enjoy the real life data available on Tuva and the opportunity to upload and collect your own data sets. I hope to learn more about the capabilities of the software and have an opportunity to share all that I learn.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data analysis is a key skill for the future. Our problem today is not in accessing data or lack of data, but big data. There is just too much information available and we must learn to cull through the massive amounts of data that is being collected to gain insight into our world.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I found Tuva while I was looking for resources that would help me better implement the NGSS in my classroom. I believe Tuva will be a valuable tool in increasing my students' understanding and analysis of data in both the classroom and the real world.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

When students leave my classroom I want them to be effective communicators, collaborative team players, innovative thinks, and informed citizens, regardless of where their educational and career paths may take them. The key to unlocking these skills lies in data literacy.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I want to be a Fellow so I can learn how to integrate more data-driven activities and technology into the classroom and further develop my own data literacy skills. I also want to share what I learn through this program with other educators so they can help develop their students into scientifically literate citizens.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Since data is everywhere, people must have strong data literacy skills in order to process large amounts of information, distinguish real news from fake news, and make knowledgeable decisions. Teaching our students how to work with and understand data will prepare them to be successful in school, society, and their careers.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I teach Probability and Statistics to high school students and I would love to effectively use Tuva with my students to improve their understand of the topics. Once I get a better understanding of how to use the site's features, I can share with the other teachers in my district so all of our students can benefit from Tuva.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

The use of data is everywhere - TV, radio, magazines, social media, etc. Only people who understand the data and how it is being represented are able to make informed decisions. Those who are not data literate are dependent on others to interpret the finding for them, allowing them to be easily manipulated.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I wanted to be a fellow so that I could grow in my capacity as a teacher leader and expand my toolkit for teaching students to analyze data.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

I believe data literacy is important because it is a necessary component of solving 21st century problems. It's also a powerful tool for analyzing the patterns in the world around us in order to improve our world.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

This fellowship seemed like a great chance to talk with both software developers and educators about promoting student questioning skills in my classroom. I like the number and variety of data sets made available by Tuva Labs for students to practice their analysis skills. I was also interested to hear how teachers in different parts of the country approach the subject.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data isn’t just collected to construct pretty graphs. It’s collected to give valid answers to questions. Data literacy enables effective evaluation of controls, experimental setup, tools for the job and methods of analysis.

Laura Diaz

  • Subject: Biology
  • School: The Bay School

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I have been working on an environmental justice research study that I want to incorporate a data mining activity with. I am particularly excited to use a morre student-friendly interface to making data more interesting.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data literacy is incredibly important because scientists need tondraw conclusions from the data collected. If we can't get our students to be inspired by the numbers, the importance of science is undermined.

Lindsey Mueller

  • Subject: AP Biology, Honors Biology, Science Research
  • School: Eureka Senior High

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

One of my goals is to incorporate more data analysis into my classroom to increase student data literacy. I am excited to learn how to use Tuva to bring more data into my classroom.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data literacy extends beyond the classroom. In order for students to become productive members of society it is up to us to teach them how to interpret data and make informative decisions based on data the see both inside and outside the classroom.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I love using Tuva and I believe it is a revolutionary interface teaching critical skills. I love telling others about Tuva.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data literacy is the key to being informed and aware. I believe the lack of data literacy skills is one of the main roots to many areas of academic weakness in schools today. Mastering data literacy skills enables individuals to interact with and understand this digital age we are in.

Malia Rowland

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I would like to incorporate Tuva into my classes to help my students learn scientific literacy and become confident with analyzing data.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

It allows students to make informed decisions outside of the classroom.

Maura Foley

  • Subject: 7th and 8th Grade Earth Science

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

To learn more ways to incorperate data literacy into my classroom.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Understanding data is a key part engaging in the scientific method, however, it is also an important skill for interpreting many types of information beyond science - such as the graphs and figures that are often included in news about current events. Being data literate is a key part of being a citizen in the 21st century.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

I was first introduced to Tuva in 2014, and was thrilled with the amount of engagement, relevance, and true meaning-making it invoked. I am excited to work with Tuva to help with ongoing improvements and to bring Tuva to the teachers I work with, both in my building and across my district.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Data literacy is one of the least taught but most essential skills we can teach our students. Various representations of data are everywhere, and the ability to interpret and draw conclusions from data is becoming increasingly important in order for students to be responsible, knowledgeable, problem-solving citizens of the world.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

For students with learning differences statistics is sometimes the curriculum that is modified so that students can reach goals in algebra but often career paths demand statistics rather than calculus. I want to learn how to use Tuva to provide statistics education that is powerful for my students with learning differences.

Why do you think data literacy is important?

When I think of the successful 34 year old instead of the successful 19 year old I think data literacy will be a large part of the mathematical mindset of that person.

Why did you want to be a Fellow or what is the best part of being a Fellow?

As a Regional STEM Coach I wanted a deeper understanding of all aspects of TUVA to allow better implementation with students and to offer quality support to other educators. To quote John Locke, “The improvement of understanding is for two ends: first, our own increase of knowledge; secondly, to enable us to deliver that knowledge to others.”

Why do you think data literacy is important?

Understanding data is crucial in STEM practices. Knowing how to collect, filter, represent, analyze, and even argue with data, guides students in making sense of science phenomena. More than ever this is a 21st Century skill high in demand in the workplace that enables the human factor to be intelligently applied to a large amount of available data.
