Have you heard of distant reading? And no, it does not require you to get new glasses. Distant Reading is how google finds what you asked for. This technology is being applied to historical documents that have all been scanned and digitized to make online libraries. A historian can search millions of digitized documents and find enough data to draw statistically significant conclusions. For example, instead of hand counting the number of times a certain reference is made in a set of documents, the computer can do it for you! Distance reading allows us to examine historical evidence in a brand new way. Do you think you can incorporate this into your classroom? How so?
