Promote Tsunami Awareness
Activity on the dataset Tsunamis since 1980
Students will create a data visualization that can be used to increase awareness of tsunamis, their dangers, and safety in a coastal community.
Learning objectives: Essential understanding or skill: Analyze, interpret and communicate with evidence to increase the general public’s understanding of natural disasters like tsunamis. Other information for teachers: Students should be familiar with basic Tuva tools to complete this activity. !--- Note: This dataset does include some statistics on death, injury, and damages from past tsunamis. Discuss as is appropriate to the age group. It is possible to hide some attributes using the Display Settings Card if you prefer. ---!{border-color:#008000;text-align:left;} Students will: Generate a list of questions that can and can’t be answered with these data; Choose one question to explore by creating their own graph; Annotate their graph, create a title, and write a clear message about the data.
Welcome to this Tuva activity! In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 5th as World Tsunami Awareness Day. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction was given the task to commemorate past tsunami disasters worldwide. Following the 2011 disaster in their own country, Japan suggested that World Tsunami Awareness Day be established. They asked that it be a day when everyone works to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to reduce risk. Coastal areas in the four ocean basins are most vulnerable to tsunamis. The IOC-UNESCO and Member States contribute to World Tsunami Awareness Day through meetings, round tables, workshops, local events, publications, videos, and press meetings. In this activity, you will come up with several questions you can and can’t answer with the data included. You can then choose one question to answer with a graph of your choice and present it in a way that could increase tsunami awareness and safety. Click Next to get started!
