Earth Systems Budget
Assessment
A large expanse of ice covers the Arctic Ocean. Each year the Arctic sea ice grows in winter and shrinks in summer. Scientists are studying how much global climate change is impacting the Arctic sea ice. In this assessment, students will use computational representations to illustrate the relationships among Earth systems and how those relationships are being modified due to human activity. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) 1. Describe relationships among Earth systems. 2. Use computational representations of earth systems data to model inputs and outputs. 3. Use computational representations of earth systems data to support claims and explanations related to human impact. 4. Revise a computational model.

Scientists are studying how much global climate change is impacting the Arctic sea ice. View the video for more details about this phenomenon. Sea ice extent is difficult to accurately measure from the Earth's surface. Scientists use satellites that pass above the poles to track and collect this data. These satellites have documented Arctic sea ice changes since 1979.
