Using Linear Models to Investigate Energy Usage
Task
Task Introduction The purpose of this task is to fit a linear function for a scatter plot that suggests a linear association and to assess the strength of that relationship both formally and informally. Students will investigate linear relationships in multiple contexts that are related to energy usage. The mathematical skills that students will practice are: Identify features of scatter plots such as linearity or clustering Draw conclusions from linear relationships in context Assess the strength of a linear relationship informally by fitting a line Assess the strength of a linear relationship formally by using a correlation coefficient Determine when a linear relationship is appropriate based on the trend of the scatter plot Use a line of best fit to informally make a prediction Interpret the slope of a linear model in context
