OpenSciEd B.2, Lesson 8: Carbon Dioxide Temperature Investigation
Task
Use this investigation with OpenSciEd HS Biology Unit B.2, Lesson 8 during Parts 4-5 and 9. Tuva has digitized the Carbon Dioxide Temperature Investigation and Carbon Dioxide Investigation handouts used in Parts 4–5 and the Global Carbon Dioxide Data handout from Part 9. Our version of these sections provides students with opportunities to deepen data sensemaking using data visualizations. This is not a standalone lesson, and it should be used in conjunction with the OpenSciEd Teacher Edition. Where This Investigation Fits into the Storyline In our last lesson, we investigated case studies of carbon sinks burning around the world and found common climate-related and human-caused factors — drought, rising temperatures, land use changes, and fire suppression — behind why they burn. When to Use Tuva Day 1 Complete Parts 1–3 of the lesson outside of Tuva. (Use pages 1–13 of the OpenSciEd Teacher Edition.) Have students log into Tuva before starting Part 4. Once in Tuva, students will read and follow the investigation procedure and record their data in a Tuva Table. During Part 5, students use data visualizations to make sense of the data in small groups. Day 2 Complete Parts 7–8 of the lesson outside of Tuva. (Use pages 17–19 of the Teacher Edition.) Have students log into Tuva before starting Part 9, the Turn and Talk about Global Temperature and Carbon Dioxide. Instead of looking at a static graph on a slide, students will use the Tuva Tools to create their own graph. Close Tuva after the Turn and Talk. What Comes Next The remainder of the lesson should be taught outside of Tuva.
In our last lesson, we investigated case studies of carbon sinks burning around the world and found common climate-related and human-caused factors — drought, rising temperatures, land use changes, and fire suppression — behind why they burn. We wondered what the larger consequences of these fires might be — and whether people should be concerned about all the carbon dioxide they release. In this investigation, we will be answering: Why should we be concerned that carbon sinks around the world are burning? Click Next to get started!
