OpenSciEd 8.1, Lesson 4: Deformation Investigation
Task
Use this resource with OpenSciEd unit 8.1, lesson 4. Tuva has digitized the Investigation Procedures from Part 4, the Deformation Results handout used in Parts 4 and 5, and the Results From Other Materials Tests handout from Part 8. This is not a standalone lesson. Use the OpenSciEd Teacher Edition alongside of resource to facilitate the lesson. When to Use Tuva Day One OpenSciEd Parts 1-3: Complete these before opening Tuva. OpenSciEd Part 4: Have students follow the procedure in Tuva, and record their data in Tuva's digital data tables. OpenSciEd Parts 5: Partner students up and have them complete Tuva Step 3. Decide whether you want to walk the whole class through Tuva steps 4-5 together, or if they have enough experience with line of best fit to complete it independently. (Pages 10-12 of the Teacher Edition will be useful for facilitating this portion.) OpenSciEd Part 6: Partners will compare the graphs they created using the Tuva Tools. They'll record their observations in Tuva. Day Two OpenSci Ed Part 7: Complete the Navigation Routine outside of Tuva. OpenSciEd Part 8: Use Tuva to give students hands-on practice applying what they have learned about lines of best fit and slope to the secondhand data from engineers. OpenSciEd Parts 9–11: Complete outside of Tuva.
In our last lesson, we looked at slow-motion videos of collisions, used a laser and mirror to detect tiny bending in glass, and watched a concrete beam bend, crack, and break under force. We figured out that even really rigid objects bend or change shape in collisions. Your class generated an plan for investigating how much you have to push on any object to get it to deform (temporarily or permanently). Now, you will carry out that plan. Click Next to get started.
