Patterns in Ordered Pairs (IM Grade 5, Unit 7, Lesson 11)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is to continue to analyze the relationship between two patterns by plotting corresponding numbers on the coordinate grid. After generating patterns in previous lessons, students now generate patterns and interpret corresponding terms as coordinates on the coordinate grid. They make these ordered pairs from the patterns and plot them on the coordinate grid. They observe patterns and interpret the meaning of points on the coordinate grid in terms of generating rules. How Tuva Enhances the Lesson This Tuva lesson integrates content from the IM warm-up and Activities 1 and 2 into a single, coherent digital experience. Students move seamlessly between tables and coordinate graphs, allowing them to generate patterns, create ordered pairs, and analyze relationships without switching materials or redrawing graphs. Tuva’s interactive tools allow students to plot points quickly, identify corresponding terms, and compare graphs efficiently. Features such as dragging points, labeling directly on the graph, and viewing immediate visual feedback reduce time spent on procedural tasks and increase focus on interpreting patterns and relationships. While IM allots approximately 50 minutes for this lesson, the same learning goals can be achieved in under 20 minutes using Tuva, making it well suited for a single class period, a targeted small-group lesson, or a station-based model.
Notice and Wonder: The Coordinate Grid Look at the coordinate grid on the left. A *coordinate grid* is a grid, or pattern, of evenly spaced intersecting lines, formed by the horizontal and vertical axes.
