Problem Solving with Line Plots Activity 2 Mathematical Questions (IM Grade 5, Unit 6, Lesson 15)
Task
Activity Purpose: The purpose of this activity is for students to answer questions about a line plot, using the same context as in the previous activity. Students relate repeated addition of the same fraction to multiplication which they studied in a previous unit. They also address a question about the sum of all of the data. Because there is a lot of data, there are many viable strategies to answer this question and the Activity Synthesis focuses on sharing these strategies. When students solve problems about the apricot weights, using the line plot, they reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2). How Tuva Enhances the lesson Tuva brings this lesson to life by allowing students to interact directly with fractional data. Each apricot is represented by a draggable card, helping students visualize and compare fractional weights before plotting them on a line plot. This hands-on exploration supports the major work of the grade by reinforcing that repeated addition of the same fraction is equivalent to multiplication. As students manipulate and analyze the data, they build fluency with fractional computation and deepen their understanding of how multiplication can represent the total of equal fractional amounts.
Activity 2; Mathematical Questions Let’s solve problems, using a line plot. In this activity, we will look at the weights of the apricots Mai picked and use the line plot to answer questions about the data.
