Representing Fractions on a Line Plot (IM Grade 5, Unit 6, Lesson 14)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for students to make and interpret line plots displaying fractions in eighths. Narrative In this lesson, students use fraction arithmetic to solve problems about line plots. Students make line plots by using given data and then they solve problems about the line plots. Students have worked with these line plots in a previous grade. The new part of the work in this lesson and the next is the level of complexity of the questions they answer. In this lesson, they perform arithmetic with the fractions and answer questions that involve thinking about all the data as a whole and certain measurements as a fraction of that whole (MP2). How Tuva Enhances the Lesson Using Tuva makes it easier to see and understand the data. The line plot is interactive, and the points are color-coded by egg weight, so you can quickly notice patterns and compare values. You can also hover over or select data points to explore them more closely, helping you make sense of what the data show.
You may have worked with line plots before! A line plot is a way to show data along a number line. Each mark above the number line represents one piece of data. We use line plots to organize data and to see patterns — like which values occur most often or how the data are spread out.
