Fractional Measurements on Line Plots (IM Grade 4, Unit 3, Lesson 13)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for students to display a set of measurements in fractions of a unit ($$\frac {1}{8}$$, $$\frac {1}{4}$$ , $$\frac {1}{2}$$) on a line plot, and then interpret the data. Students also add and subtract fractions to answer questions about data presented in line plots. In this lesson, students plot data involving lengths measured in $$\frac {1}{8}$$-inch units and analyze the data. They use the line plots and their knowledge of equivalence and fraction operations to answer questions about situations. How Tuva Enhances the lesson Using Tuva allows students to interact dynamically with the data instead of simply viewing a static line plot. Students can plot measurements in both eighths and fourths of an inch on the same graph, making it easier to visualize and compare equivalent fractions. By manipulating the data directly, students deepen their understanding of how fractional units relate and strengthen their reasoning about adding and subtracting fractions in real contexts. Supports accessibility for: Conceptual Processing, Visual-Spatial Processing
Activity 2- Colored Pencil Lengths Today we are going to analyze data about different pencil lengths. The pencils are measured in inches. An inch is a unit of measurement commonly used in the United States. You may have used square inch tiles in school before. Each tile is one inch long on each side, which can help us visualize and compare the lengths of pencils..
