Answer Questions about Scaled Bar Graphs (IM Grade 3, Unit 1, Lesson 7)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this activity is for students to use data presented in scaled bar graphs to solve one-step “how many more?” and “how many fewer?” problems. The graph in the previous activity was familiar to students since they had created it in a previous lesson, but the graph used in this activity is new to students. Because the graph has a scale of 10, students need to estimate values that do not show an exact multiple of 10. As a result, answers may vary slightly. Accept all answers that align to reasonable estimates. How Tuva enhances this lesson Tuva makes the lesson more accessible and flexible by using colored bars to help students easily compare categories. Key vocabulary is embedded right into the activity, with language supports and translation options available for multilingual learners. In addition, teachers can adjust the vertical axis to show different scales, allowing them to tailor the graph to student needs.
“Questions about Insects in the Garden” Let’s solve some problems based on data represented in bar graphs. We’re going to look at data about insects found in a garden. These are the types of insects that were spotted.
