Represent Data in Scaled Bar Graphs (IM Grade 3, Unit 1, Lesson 5)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for students to create a scaled bar graph. In a previous lesson, students collected categorical class data and learned how to create a scaled picture graph. Students now make connections between scaled picture graphs and scaled bar graphs and expand the idea of a scale that is more than one to bar graphs. In this lesson, students choose a scale of 2 or 5 for their bar graph. How Tuva Enhances the lesson With Tuva, teachers can instantly see students’ thinking as they decide which bar matches each animal. Because the bar labels are intentionally hidden, students must rely on mathematically meaningful features—such as scale, bar height, and the relative sizes of the data—to justify their choices. This makes students’ reasoning far more visible than in a traditional paper task. Tuva also streamlines assessment. Students can complete the cool-down electronically, with many items auto-scored and all responses organized in one place. This gives teachers immediate insight into who can interpret scaled bar graphs and who may need additional support. In addition, Tuva enhances access and equity. Students with fine-motor challenges can focus on interpreting the graph rather than producing it, and consistent color coding provides helpful visual cues for learners who benefit from structure. These features reduce frustration, save time, and ensure that every student can engage deeply with the mathematical ideas—identifying and analyzing relationships in data rather than getting stuck on the mechanics of drawing.
In this activity, we will look at students’ favorite animals from the zoo. These are the animals they chose as their favorites.
