Interpret Measurement Data (IM Grade 2, Unit 3, Lesson 16)
Task
Lesson Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for students to continue to consider what numbers to use to label the tick marks as they create line plots. Students will use data presented in a table to determine the longest and shortest length. Then they create a line plot and interpret the data to answer questions. When working with measurements with larger numbers, students learn to set up their number line to start with the shortest length. Students also answer questions that require calculations. How Tuva Enhances the lesson This Tuva lesson strategically combines the mathematical goals of Activities 1 and 2 from Illustrative Mathematics Grade 2, Unit 3, Lesson 16 into a single, coherent learning experience. While IM allots approximately 35 minutes across two activities, Tuva enables students to engage in the same mathematical thinking in significantly less time—often completing the work in about half the time—without sacrificing sense-making or rigor. Tuva enhances this lesson by: Saving instructional time while preserving the full learning arc of creating and interpreting line plots Reducing cognitive load through interactive sorting, grouping, and visual representation of data Making mathematical structure visible, helping students identify the smallest and largest values and choose appropriate start and end points for the number line Supporting accessibility in alignment with IM guidance by activating background knowledge and reinforcing organization and memory Strengthening mathematical practices, particularly constructing arguments (MP3) and using structure (MP7) By streamlining transitions and embedding supports directly into the task, Tuva increases access for a wide range of learners while allowing teachers to focus instructional time on discussion, reasoning, and synthesis.
Welcome to this Activity! Today you will use a line plot to show and understand data. A line plot shows data using Xs above a line with numbers. Each X stands for one measurement.
