Density of Water Activity (STEMscopes TN 6.ESS2.1 and 2.2, Explore 2)
Task
##Teacher Background Where This Resource Fits Within STEMscopes TN Use this resource with STEMscopes TN Scope 6.ESS2.1 and 2.2 during the Explore phase. During Explore 2: Activity - Density of Water, students are asked to input data into two different tables. This table is set up so all data can be entered in one table. How Tuva Enhances the Lesson In Tuva, the data entry process is simplified. In step 1 of the investigation, students are asked to input data into a series of tables. We have organized the table so that all data can be entered into a single table. We save the data digitally, so students cannot lose track of their data sheet. Tuva’s data visualization tools give students the opportunity to use multiple modalities to make sense of their data before answering questions. They build a deeper understanding of the data, which helps them deepen their analysis. Suggested Data Visualizations: Dot Plot with Salt Added on the x-axis and Density on the y-axis Bar Chart of Values with Water Temperature on the x-axis and Density on the y-axis, option to filter out all samples that have >0g of salt added Dot Plot with Salt Added on the x-axis and Density on the y-axis and Measurement Tool in the legend. Expert Tip: Pool all student data on a single teacher data table using Tuva's Insert Data feature. Share the dataset with students. Then, students can copy and paste the shared data into their copy of the data table in this task. This will: enable students to see patterns in the precision of the different measurement tools enlarge your sample size, thus minimizing measurement errors and preventing misconceptions provide a larger dataset so students are able to practice utilizing measures of center and grappling with data variability
