Activity - Graphing Motion and Position (STEMscopes TN 8.PS2.4 and 2.5, Explore 2)
Task
##Teacher Background Where This Resource Fits Within STEMscopes TN Use this resource with STEMscopes TN Scope 8.PS2.4 & 2.5 Motion, Force, Direction, And Position during the Explore phase. During Explore 2: Activity - Graphing Motion and Position, students are asked to read a scenario about a student who leaves class and walks to another location. From the passage, they extract the student's time, position, distance, and speed and record it on a table. Then they create three graphs: a position vs. time graph, a distance vs. time graph, and a speed vs. time graph. How Tuva Enhances the Lesson STEMscopes requires students to set up the scale for each of the three graphs. This would consume a significant amount of class time on a skill that is not central to the idea of the lesson: showing that the same set of data can be modeled graphically in three different ways. Tuva makes the graphing process more efficient. First students enter the data into a table on Tuva. Then, using Tuva's acccessible, graphing tools, they quickly drag and drop variables on the graph axes to create graphs. Tuva reduces frustration. If students set up their axes incorrectly, they can revise their graphs with the click of a button. Tuva allows students to spend less time menial graph setup and more on higher-order thinking, such as observation, comparison, and analysis.
