Activity- A Stretch of the Imagination (STEMscopes TN 8.ESS1.1, Explore 1)
Task
##Teacher Background Where This Resource Fits Within STEMscopes TN Use this resource with STEMscopes TN Scope 8.ESS1.1 The Big Bang Theory during the Explore phase. During Explore 1: Activity - A Stretch of the Imagination, students are asked to collect data, record it in a table, pool the class data, and then graph the class data. Instead of entering the class data on the STEMscopes handout, have the students input the data on Tuva. How Tuva Enhances the Lesson Tuva's accessible graphing tools make graphing efficient, which frees up time for more complex data analysis. Ideally, students would work with full sets of real, imperfect data. When students can see all the data, they notice differences, clusters, and outliers, and they have to think carefully about what the results actually show. In practice, however, graphing takes so much time that students are often limited to graphing only the mean of the class data. While the mean is useful, relying on it alone hides the variation in the data and limits opportunities for students to ask questions, compare results, and reason about why outcomes differ. Tuva makes the ideal possible. Our efficient, drag-and-drop graphing tools enable students to work with the entire dataset.
