A Force and a Pattern Activity (STEMscopes TN 5.PS2.1 and 2.2 Changes in Force and Motion Scope)
Task
Teacher Background Where This Resource Fits Within STEMscopes TN Use this resource with STEMscopes TN Scope 5.PS2.4 Forces and Patterns during the Explore phase. During Explore 1: Activity - A Force and a Pattern, students are asked to collect data, record it in a table, and graph it. Instead of entering the data on the STEMscopes handout, have the students input the data on Tuva. How Tuva Enhances the Lesson We save the data digitally, so students cannot lose track of their data sheet. Tuva makes the graphing process both more efficient and interactive. In this STEMscopes activity, students create a graph by hand, which can be a time-consuming and frustrating process. Using Tuva's acccessible, drag-and-drop graphing tools, students quickly create graphs and revise them with just a few clicks. Because the Tuva Tools make data exploration so efficient, students have time to explore their data using two different graph types. This step builds an early understanding that human choices impact the story that data tells.
After scientists collect data, they make graphs. The graphs help them figure out what the data shows. Today, you will be swinging a pendulum and collecting data. You'll keep track of the data here. Then, you'll make graphs of your data. The graphs will help you answer questions.
