Sound and Vibration: Does a Harder Hit Shake More?
Sim Lesson
Students use the Sound and Vibration Studio simulation to strike a drum with a gentle hit and then a strong hit, and compare how much the sound waves shake a nearby plate of rice. Lesson Purpose Young students are building the idea that sound comes from vibration, and that a bigger vibration makes a bigger effect. Comparing a gentle hit with a strong hit gives a clear cause and effect they can see.
Have you ever touched a drum while it was making sound and felt it buzz under your hand? Sound happens when something shakes, or vibrates. What happens to the shaking when you hit something harder? In this lesson, you will use the Sound and Vibration Studio simulation to hit a drum gently and then hard, and watch how much it shakes a plate of rice.
