Signs of Change: How Can You Tell a New Substance Formed?
Sim Lesson
Students use the Signs of Change simulation to mix pairs of mystery solids and liquids, find the pair that bubbles and gives off gas, and compare it with pairs that only mix. Lesson Purpose Students often think that any time things are combined, a new substance is made. Comparing a pair that clearly reacts with pairs that only mix helps them look for evidence, like gas forming, of a real chemical change.
Mixing in the Kitchen When you mix things in the kitchen, sometimes they just blend together, and sometimes they make something new, like the fizzing when baking soda meets vinegar. How can you tell when mixing two things actually makes a new substance? In this lesson, you will use the Signs of Change simulation to mix mystery solids and liquids and look for signs that a new substance formed.
