Section 1, Lesson 1: Summary, Quick View, and Prep List
Lesson
Lesson 1: What are sand dunes and why are they important? Instructional Time: ~ 4 days Learning Targets Ask questions to gather information about the changing sand dunes. Gather information to define the problem caused by changing sand dunes. Summary In this lesson, students are introduced to the Sleeping Bear Dunes and how they are changing. They read about their importance as habitats, barriers, and cultural landmarks. They use the evidence collected to define the problem caused by the changing sand dunes. ![]40:lf Students figure out that the sand dunes are important because they provide habitats and barriers along the lake and they have cultural importance. They define the problem that the sand dunes changing might change animal habitats, weaken or destroy protection, and impact cultural importance. Students make connections to the storyline by gathering evidence to begin to construct why the changing sand dunes might be a problem. In lesson 2, students will begin to research why the dunes are changing to determine what is causing them to change. !--- Building Towards K-2-ETS1-1 (2.ETS1.A.1) *NGSS (MLS) 3-Dimensions:* ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems: A situation that people want to change or create can be approached as a problem to be solved through engineering. Asking questions, making observations, and gathering information are helpful in thinking about problems. Before beginning to design a solution, it is important to clearly understand the problem. Asking Questions and Defining Problems: Ask questions based on observations to find more information about the natural and/or designed world(s). Define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool. *CCSS(MLS):* ELA RI.2.1 (2.R.1.A.b) RI.2.5 (2.R.3.A.c) SOCIAL STUDIES (2.RI.6.C.a) ---!{border-color:#008000;text-align:left;}
