Scatter Plots on Tuva
Lesson
A scatterplot is a graphical representation useful for analyzing the relationship between two quantitative attributes or studying trends over time. The Tuva scatterplot allows you to analyze the relationship between two or more attributes. The position of the a dot in the scatter plot is determined by two values: The value on the horizontal axis or the x-axis, and The value on the vertical axis or the y-axis. Creating a scatter plot on Tuva is fairly simple. You just need to drag and drop a quantitative attribute on each of the two axes. Creating a Scatterplot with Two Quantitative Attributes: You can create the most basic scatter plot by placing a quantitative attribute on the x-axis and another quantitative attribute on the y-axis. ![]700 Your finished graph will look like this: ![]700 Creating a Scatterplot with More than Two Attributes: Tuva allows you to display more than two attributes in a scatter plot. There are different ways you can do it. Method 1: Drop a Categorical Attribute in the Legend Area: Once you have created a basic scatter plot, you can drag and drop a categorical attribute in the Legend Area. ![]700 The categories of the attribute will get highlighted in the scatter plot by color. ![]700 Method 2: Drop a Quantitative Attribute in the Legend Area: Once you have created a basic scatter plot, you can drag and drop a quantitative attribute in the Legend Area. The values of the attribute will get highlighted in the scatter plot by color. ![]700 Method 3: Add another Quantitative Attribute to the Y-Axis: Once you have created a basic scatter plot, you can drag and drop another quantitative attribute adjacent to the first attribute on the y-axis. ![]700 Your finished graph will look like this: ![]700 Method 4: Add Another Quantitative Attribute to the Y2-Axis: Once you have created a basic scatterplot, you can add a second y-axis to the graph and drop the third quantitative attribute on it. Here are the steps: Step 1: From the toolbar, open the Plot Settings Card by clicking on the :ti[settings] icon. Step 2: In the Plot Settings Card, slide the toggle button to add the Y2 axis to your graph. ![]700 Step 3: Close the Plot Settings Card. You will see the second y-axis on the right. ![]700 Step 4: Drag and drop the third quantitative attribute on the Y2-axis to create the dual axis scatterplot. ![]700 In the interactive tutorial that follows, you will explore the Man's Best Friend dataset and create your own scatter plots on Tuva. ![]720
