Lesson 2.9a: Patterns Along One Axis
Lesson
Introduction - Find Meaning in Patterns These lessons review some patterns that are often found in graphs, what the patterns may mean, and how we can help students talk about and describe the patterns in more detail. We will explore the following patterns that often show up in different kinds of analyses: Lesson 2.9a: Patterns along one axis, Lesson 2.9b: Patterns in group comparisons, Lesson 2.9c: Patterns in XY space, and Lesson 2.9d: Patterns in change through time In this lesson, we will review Patterns Along One Axis. When students explore data along one axis, they are looking for the relative position of the distribution to provide clues about the attribute they are investigating. Key concepts for students: Identifying the relative position on the axis helps you explore the range/spread of the data; Exploring the center of an attribute and how different measures of center vary for an attribute helps you get a sense of the middle of the data; Reviewing how spread out the distribution helps you see the overall shape of the attribute. Key Words: Distribution, Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Skewed, Bell-Shaped, Bimodal
