Lesson 2.2: Measures of Center: What is 'typical'?
Lesson
Introduction In Variability - Lesson 2.1 you: Viewed distributions of data in a dot plot Described variability in terms of range and distribution shape. In this lesson you’ll learn: How to describe where the most typical values for a group are. How to represent the spread of typical values with a single “average” number. Describing the spread of “typical values” is important because it helps determine how spread out the data are from the center. Prerequisites Lesson 2.1 (Introduction to Variability) is strongly recommended Lesson Keywords Spread of typical values: The range of the middle ±50% of the data Measure of center: A single number used to represent the center of a distribution Average: A general reference to a measure of center (mean or median). Also used synonymously with mean. Mean and Median: Two ways of describing the center of a distribution with a single number
