Lesson 2.1: Introducing variability
Lesson
Introduction This lesson introduces the idea of variability in data. In this lesson, you will learn: How to show variability in data using a Dot Plot How to describe the variability in terms of Range and Distribution Shape Lesson Keywords Distribution: Visualization of how a group of numbers is spread along a number line Variability: How spread out data are from the center Maximum Value: Highest value Minimum Value: Lowest value Range: The distance between the maximum and minimum values Skewed: A distribution that is not symmetrical Bimodal: A distribution that has two main modes (or clumps) Bell-shaped: A symmetrical distribution with one main clump in the middle (also called ‘Normal’) Tail: The area of points in a distribution that tapers off to one or both sides
