Data Story - Where Are All the Big Ones Living?
Lesson
Introduction Owl Limpets are ocean snails. They live on rocks and cliff edges at the edge of the ocean. Something really cool about these snails is that they “farm” the algae that they eat off of rocks, meaning they purposefully eat parts at a time and let other parts grow. Another interesting thing about these snails is that the larger one are typically the females, and the smaller ones are the males. So you can look at the sizes of Owl Limpets to get sense of how the population in an area is doing overall. Many large snails and you will likely have lots of baby snails in the area, mostly small snails and it may be harder for them to make baby snails. Marine Protected Areas are parks in the ocean that offer protection to the ecosystem or animals that live in the park. When you protect the animals in a place, some interesting things happen to them.
