Bar Charts of Frequencies
Lesson
Bar charts are perhaps one of the most popular graphical representations. You may have used a bar graph where the bars represent the frequency (number of cases) of a value or category. Bar Graph of Frequencies: The most basic bar chart on Tuva is the bar graph of frequencies. The bar graph of frequencies shows comparisons among groups by displaying the frequency of cases in each group. The lengths of the bars are proportional to the values (frequencies) they represent. Creating a Bar Chart of Frequencies with a Single Categorical Attribute: Here are the steps to creating the simplest bar graph of frequencies: Step 1: Click on a categorical attribute to apply it to the Legend and color the dots in the graphing area by the categories of the chosen attribute. ![]700 Step 2: You can access the bar graph of frequencies from the toolbar. ![]700 Step 3: Once you select :ti[bar-chart-of-frequencies] from the toolbar, your bar chart will look like this: ![]700 Creating a Bar Chart of Frequencies with a Single Quantitative Attribute: A Tuva Bar Chart of Frequencies can also display the categories of a quantitative attribute by converting the numeric values to numerical intervals and then displaying the aggregate frequency for each interval. Here are the steps: Step 1: Click on any quantitative attribute in the :ti[case-card] to color the data points in the graphing area by the categories of the chosen attribute. ![]700 Step 2: From the toolbar, choose :ti[bar-chart-of-frequencies] to create the graph. Your graph will look like this: ![]700 You can increase the number of bar sections by clicking on the + button on the top right of the graph. Similarly, you can decrease the number of bar sections by clicking on the - button. Creating Multiple Bar Charts of Frequencies with Two Attributes: You can also create multiple bar graphs of frequencies on Tuva. These charts help you to discern patterns, if any, between two attributes. Step 1: Create a bar graph of frequencies with a categorical or quantitative attribute of your choice. Step 2: Drag and drop another categorical attribute on the x- or y-axis. You can see that it is easier to make comparisons between categories using a bar graph of frequencies. In the interactive tutorial that follows, you will explore the Dinosaurs dataset and create your own bar charts of frequencies. ![]720
