Trash Trends
Data Story
This data story asks students to explore a dataset about trash and recommend a strategy or action that could reduce the amount of trash that we generate and send to landfills.
Welcome to this Tuva student challenge! When you throw something away, what happens to it? Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) -- more commonly known as trash or garbage -- consists of everyday items we use and then discard. Trash is generated in schools, homes, offices, hospitals, and businesses, and includes newspaper, packaging, paper products, food containers, yard and food waste, batteries, paint, old tools, furniture, and appliances. The United States generates a lot of trash. Each city or town has choices to make to manage what and how much is produced by their local population. Dealing with trash requires space for burying, burning, sorting, transporting, recycling, or reusing.
