Notice & Wonder: Civil War Battles
Data Story
In this Notice & Wonder Data Story, students investigate data from 15 major Civil War battles. They begin by observing only the early battles, making observations and asking questions without drawing conclusions. As additional battles are revealed, students compare their initial thinking with the complete dataset and discover how conclusions can change when more evidence becomes available. The lesson integrates history, mathematics, and data literacy while emphasizing the importance of considering all available evidence. Students will: Read and interpret graphs representing historical data. Make observations supported by evidence. Ask meaningful questions about a dataset. Compare partial and complete datasets. Recognize how additional evidence can change conclusions. Explain why complete datasets lead to stronger conclusions. Big Idea: Looking at only part of a dataset can lead to incomplete or incorrect conclusions. Scientists, mathematicians, and historians examine as much evidence as possible before drawing conclusions. Social Studies Connection This lesson supports historical thinking by helping students use evidence to analyze events and understand how conclusions are strengthened by examining multiple sources of information.
