How Many Chromosomes?
Data Story
Students look for patterns in the Chromosome Counts for Species dataset. Students use the Describing Shapes of Distributions handout to help them describe the patterns they observe.
Welcome to this Tuva data story! Chromosomes are structures found inside the nucleus of cells. A chromosome is made of proteins and DNA organized into genes. Genes determine the physical traits that an individual has. This dataset includes chromosome numbers for over 100 selected plant, animal, and protist species. Note that due to advances in research methods and technology, understanding of the genetics of individual species and implications for classifying them is changing rapidly! For many species, the number of chromosomes can vary. In this data story, you will identify and describe patterns in the dataset. Click Next to get started!
