Welcome to this Tuva data story! AIDS was first reported in the United States in 1981 and has since grown into a major global epidemic. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. The virus gradually eats away at the body's ability to combat infections by maiming cells of the body's immune system. Regardless of geography or context, people who are HIV positive become objects of undue discrimination and stigma. Apart from facing challenging health issues, they may be forced out of homes, fired from jobs or even become victims of physical violence.
